Getting your hair cut at the barbers can be time-consuming and expensive which is why home hair trimmers are becoming more popular. They are very easy to use and provide very good value for money, often costing little more than the price of a single haircut at the barbers, and sometimes even less. As always as a particular type of product gains in popularity, more and more manufacturers produce that product and a wide range of models become available.
To try and distinguish themselves from the opposition more features are advertised (some less useful than others) making it difficult to make a choice. To help, we have tested several leading brands against each other and arrived at a top 3 selection of the best electric shaver for head hair.
To make sure that the testing was carried out as objectively as possible, an equal number of days were left between tests. The Top 3 that we have selected all have slightly different features. We have considered all these aspects and made our selection based on the best overall performance and value for money.

I bought my first electric hair trimmer many years ago, just to tidy up the hair around my ears between haircuts. Since then I have progressed to using a trimmer all the time to cut and trim my hair.
Electric hair and beard trimmers do save money on the cost of haircuts, but for me the best feature is the convenience of not having to make an appointment and go to get my haircut. Added to that, I like to be able to trim my beard as soon as I feel it needs trimming and reshaping.
What to look for depends on the main use that your trimmer will be used for. If it is mainly for cutting hair, a full-size trimmer is best. If it is for trimming and shaping a beard, you will probably be better off with the smaller models.
How to Cut Hair with Electric Hair Trimmers
I have used electric hair and beard trimmers for many years now and would be lost without one.
If you have never cut your own hair before, it can be a little daunting the first time you have a go. When I first started, I began with the longest length that the trimmer would cut. My theory was that if I made a mess, there would be enough left for the barber to tidy it all up. My hair actually turned out OK, and much tidier than it looked before I started. After that first attempt was successful, I haven't looked back.
Over the time, I have been cutting my hair I have become more confident and much quicker. One thing to keep in mind if you are starting out to cut your hair, is that you need to move the trimmer about your head slowly and you have to make several passes of the same area to make sure that you catch all the hair. While I have my hair quite short, it is too long for me to be able to clean my neck hair up very well, for that I do need someone else to do that for me.
From the many, many hair and beard trimmers available that I have looked at, I have ended up with 3 that I consider the best available. All three are relatively inexpensive yet at the same time are of high quality. Read on to see why...
The Conair 21-Piece Chrome Custom Haircut Kit contains everything that you might need to trim hair, even to the extent that it comes with two hair clips. There are 9 separate combs which, when combined with the 5 height adjustments in the trimmer itself, give a total of 50 different cut lengths. Included in the kit is an instructional DVD showing you how to create different styles using these trimmers.
The Conair 21-Piece Chrome Custom Haircut Kit contains everything you could ever need while trimming hair. With 50 combinations of length, you can get exactly the right length that you want. This was chosen in first place over the Wahl only because it has an instructional DVD to help you when you are first starting to cut hair. In
The actual trimmer itself 'feels' a little light and insubstantial when using it.
Having used several hair trimmers over the years, the Wahl 79300-400 Color Pro 20 Piece Complete Haircutting Kit, is to me the best I have used. I like the color-coded combs as this saves having to try and read a very faint size printed in black on a black comb. The shape of the trimmer makes it very comfortable to hold and maneuver around the contours of your head. The carry case, which comes complete with combs, cleaning brush, oil, and scissors keeps everything in one place and saves small parts getting mislaid.
The most important element about a hair trimmer is how well it trims hair - the Wahl 79300-400 Color Pro cuts hair perfectly and the wide variety in the size of the combs make blending different lengths much easier to do. The supplied carrying case is one of those simple little items that make life easier. With other trimmers, bits and pieces tend to get mislaid. With a carrying case, everything is kept together and there when you need it. I also like the fact that Wahl are confident enough in the quality of the product to give it a
I did use this for trimming my beard, but it is not as good as a dedicated beard trimmer. The full width that goes toward making it very good at trimming hair means that it is too big to be able to get into the awkward places like under the nose.
The Panasonic ER224S All-in-One Hair Clipper & Beard Wet/Dry Trimmer is a very versatile trimmer that copes well with both head hair and beard. A pop-up trimmer handles delicate shaping of facial hair. Rather than have separate combs for each length there is a simple dial that allows you to set a range of lengths from 0.04" to 0.79". The trimmer is waterproof and can be cleaned by washing under a tap.
Panasonic ER224S All-in-One Hair Clipper & Beard Wet/Dry Trimmer scores very highly for the quality of the trim it provides, the ease of altering the length of cut and the fact that it can cut both facial and head hair. The flip-up trimmer is great for reaching those awkward to get at places like under the nose.
While the dial for adjusting the length of cut is a great feature, the fact that it only cuts up to 0.79" (just over 3/4") means that it will cut too short for some people's preferences.
It was a difficult decision between the trimmers that were chosen in the top three as all have features that recommend them. I finally went for the Conair 21-Piece Chrome Custom Haircut Kit as my top choice over the second choice only because it came with the instructional DVD, which when starting our cutting your own hair is a real help.
As for trimming head hair, there wasn't anything to choose between it and the
The Panasonic ER224S All-in-One Hair Clipper & Beard Wet/Dry Trimmer is a good as a beard trimmer but not quite as good as the Conair or the Wahl for trimming hair, and that was the aim of this review. It is a good compromise though if you only want to have one trimmer for all your hair, and the maximum cut length of just over 3/4" is long enough for your hair style. Whichever of the three that you decide on, all are excellent products and will serve you well.
