The Best 3 Beard Combs

We were amazed at the price differences for beard combs. Anything from $1.50 to $150. Quite a difference! And while our top three are all over $5, they're absolutely not up the top end of the scale. Although these high-end beard combs were great, they definitely weren't £130 better than the others! All of our top three give a no static or snagging comb, they look and feel great and come in under $20 at time of writing. So read on to discover our top three best beard combs.

Why Buy a Beard Comb?

You really need to comb your beard to keep it healthy, clean and well-kept in appearance. A regular comb won't do the job. It will be too long and not curved in the right way to fit to your face. So what are the advantages of combing your beard with a beard comb?

  • Size and distance between the teeth specific to a beard comb.  When you buy a beard comb you get the right size and specification for your beard. So think about this when choosing your beard comb. If you have a small beard with soft hair, choose a beard comb with very little spacing between the teeth. If you have a dense and long beard go for a wider toothed beard comb.
  • Comb Material. You will notice that all of our top three beard combs are made from wood. This is key. Beard hair by its very nature will generate a lot of static and friction. A plastic comb that you may own for your hair (on your head!) will electrify a beard and you will definitely end up with a bit of a wild beard. Which you may not want! So go wood. The best beard comes are all made from this material.

A beard comb is also a really neat bit of kit. The right comb looks great, smells like a wood-shop and has a feel of quality wood. It's a thing most of us just like to hold, see and smell. It also does a great job keeping your beard looking and feeling great. So a win-win

Beard Combing Technique

Some of this is pretty obvious, but there are also some things that you may not have thought about. So read on for advice to get the most from your beard comb.

  • When to Comb: After moisturizing is definitely the best time. Always use a quality beard oil to give the hair a bit of weight and make it easier to untangle any knots. This helps prevent pulling and breaking hair and lets the comb slide through your beard with ease.  Whatever you do, don't comb after the shower. When your beard is wet combing it will definitely result in beard hair loss. Don't be fooled by thinking you can quickly dry it off with the hair dryer and give it a comb. Hot hair has weaker roots, so again you risk hair loss.
  • Speed of Comb: Slow and steady is definitely the way. Any aggressive combing, or very fast combing is to be avoided. You need to go slow, untangling any knots you find gently.
  • Direction of Comb: Always go from top to bottom. And from side to center. As well as taming the hair you are also programming it to grown in the desired direction.

It's not difficult. You will definitely get the hang of the right technique straight away. It's just a case of knowing how.

Detailed Reviews of the Best Beard Combs

Each of our top three is made from great quality wood. The teeth are smooth and the combs all handle really well. You'll see we have one comb with only one size of teeth. If you go for this one make sure the size of teeth is appropriate for your beard type and density.

The Huntsman Sandalwood Beard Comb

The Huntsman Sandalwood Beard Comb

A wonderful beard comb made for all beards of different shapes of sizes. High quality, great scent, travel bag included. You can't go wrong with this one.

Features

  • Made for beards of all shapes and sizes - with both fine and coarse teeth
  • Made from No.9 sandalwood
  • Extremely durable
  • No pulling, static or snagging

What's Good About It?

This is a brilliant beard comb. Works for everyone, regardless of type, texture or length of beard. A great quality comb that will last a lifetime and be a pleasure to use time and time again.

What Could Be Improved?

We really did struggle to think of a downside to this comb. So, after much deliberation we can give a word of warning to cover any wooden beard comb. They are more delicate than a plastic or metal comb. Don't sit down with it in your pocket. Don't leave it lying around on the floor, it won't fair well if trodden on. Look after it and it will look after you!

Mr Rugged Wooden Beard Comb

Mr Rugged Wooden Beard Comb

This again is a lovely beard comb. Lovely wooden material; this time pear wood, and great size and shape. One thing to note is that, this comb only comes with one size of teeth. We found this comb brilliant and excellent value for a more coarse or dense beard. If however you sport a shorter or more trim beard we would recommend a beard comb with smaller teeth.

Features

  • Redistributes natural skin oils and beard oil or balm products to nourish and hydrate growth
  • Straightens growth to reduce skin discomfort and itching as beards grow
  • No snagging or static
  • Hand crafted; each one will be unique

What's Good About It?

It is a lovely comb. You can tell it is hand-crafted and feels like a really artisan comb. On the right beard this is a delight to use.

What Could Be Improved?

If you have a shorter or less dense beard, we don't recommend this beard comb as it is better suited to, as the name suggests, a more rugged beard!

EQLEF Green Sandalwood Beard Comb

EQLEF Green Sandalwood Beard Comb

Another lovely beard comb. Like our first placed product, this one has fine and standard teeth. We would say that for a more rugged beard, one with more density or length you would be better off with our first or second placed products, as the teeth even on the standard side of this comb are relatively narrowly spaced. A great comb for a shorter beard, lovely to use and looks the part too.

Features

  • 100% green sandalwood
  • No snagging to static
  • standard and fine teeth

What's Good About It?

It is a lovely beard comb. We especially liked how each comb is unique. The wood is different colors. Some more yellow, others darker some green. It feels great in your hand and gives a great comb to manage your beard.

What Could Be Improved?

This is less suitable for longer more dense beards. Anyone whose beard would suit the Mr Rugged beard should not buy this beard comb. A great product for shorter beards.

Final Verdict on Best Beard Comb

The Huntsman came out on top for us. Although all three give the same great performance when used on the appropriate beard, the Huntsman is more of an all-rounder, suited to both long and short, dense and sparse beards. The best beard comb especially at the price, we don't hesitate to recommend it.
