Why Buy an Electric Knife Sharpener?

We've already discussed how dull knives are dangerous. But let's consider the other options. Because there is plenty of choice when it comes to sharpening your knives. And in reality, what you go for will in large part come down to what you're used to and what you intend to sharpen.

  • Sharpening with Steel:  Quality knives with a high carbon/molybdenum/vanadium alloy can easily be re-aligned b a sharpening steel. You simply place the knife blade against the steel tip of the sharpening steel at an angle of approximately 20 degrees and pull the knife down and across.
  • Sharpening with a Stone:  Many people find it best to use a three-way stone; fine-medium-coarse. You need to have an exact angle of 30-40 degrees and using a stone is definitely more for the experts and also of use for those who have non-kitchen knives that they wish to sharpen. The smaller the angle you use, the sharper the edge.
  • Sharpening with an Electric Knife Sharpener: This is great for people who don't want to think about angles and sharpness required. The knife sharpener will do all this for you, and is very safe to boot.

So let's have a look at the different features of electric knife sharpeners.

What to Look Out for When Buying an Electric Knife Sharpener

Whilst they are more restrictive, there are definitely advantages with using an electric knife sharpener. Lot of us use them, and here's why:

  • Good for Beginners: Manually sharpening a knife is a skill. If you've never done it before, you can't expect to be good at it. Inexperience can result in ruined knives and injuries. But not with an electric knife sharpener. They have blade guides and fixed angles. You can't go wrong, no skill required just a good product.
  • Good for Experienced hands: Yes that's right, they aren't just for beginners. They're quick and easy and if you have a lot of knives to sharpen that can be a very good thing.
  • No Guessing: The most difficult part of sharpening a knife is getting the angle right. With most electric knife sharpeners you just put it in and they start sharpening and the right angle. If you want different angles for different knives they the electric knife sharpener may not be for you. But for most people using kitchen knives this just isn't a consideration.

So an electric knife sharpener if the popular choice for many of us. Let's take a look at our top three.

Detailed Reviews of the Best Electric Knife Sharpener

In assessing the electric knife sharpeners we considered fit for purpose, durability and cost. All three scored highly on each count.

Linkyo Electric Knife Sharpener

Linkyo Electric Knife Sharpener

This is so easy to use. It comes with non-slip suction cup feet to keep if firmly in place during use. The automatic blade guides hold the knife at the best angle for perfect sharpening. All you need to do is draw the knife slowly towards you with absolutely no downwards pressure at all. There is also a built-in stop feature. This prevents the blade from getting damaged by stopping the sharpening if too much downward-pressure is accidentally applied.

Features

  • Quick, safe and simple to use
  • No mistakes with the automatic blade positioning guides and heavy-duty suction cups on feet
  • 2 stage sharpening to angle and sharpen, then hone and polish
  • Mess-free receptacles to catch the metal shards and filings
  • 100% lifetime warranty

What's Good About It?

It is safe, easy to use, durable and sharpens really well. The suction feet and stop features are great additions. Love this sharpener.

What Could Be Improved?

It would be good to be able to amend the angle rather than just using the pre-set angles. But this is not necessary for almost all kitchen use.

Presto 08800 EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener

Presto 08800 EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener

This is very much like the Linkyo product. It works under the same system and also has suction cups to keep it in place.

Features

  • 2 stage sharpening system
  • No guess sharpening with pre-set angle
  • Sapphirite sharpening wheels

What's Good About It?

It is easy to use, durable and safe. We had great results and also found that we could use it on serrated knives (one side only) which as definitely a bonus.

What Could Be Improved?

Much like the Linkyo, the ability to adjust the angle would be appreciated by more experiences knife sharpeners. In addition, the stop feature of the Linkyo is not present here and we did find, especially for less experienced knife-sharpeners, that this was a useful feature.

Chef's Choice 250 Diamond Hone Hybrid Knife Sharpener

Chef Choice 250 Diamond Hone Hyrbid Knife Sharpener

So you'll have probably gathered that this is both an electric and manual sharpener. This is because on top of the 2 stages of the standard electric knife sharpener, there's a third stage. This is the manual part. Here you use the ultra-thin diamond abrasives to ensure a really sharp polished edge.

Features

  • Hybrid combining electric and manual sharpeners
  • For sharpening straight and serrated edged knives of all types
  • Assembled in the USA, 1 year warranty

What's Good About It?

This is a very well made, durable sharpener. It does a great job and you can just use the third stage if you want a short cut or are somewhere without power. Very good sharpener.

What Could Be Improved?

The feet are not of the same large suction design which felt less stable compared to our first two products. Also three stages can seem a little time consuming! As with our first two products, you can't set the angle.

Final Verdict on Best Electric Knife Sharpener

There isn't a great deal to choose between these products, particularly the first two which are so similar. However, the Linkyo came out on time because as well as doing a great job and being easy to use, it also comes with a lifetime guarantee. So you know that it will keep going forever!
