Why Buy a Hair Thickening Product?

Like we said before, hair loss or thinning hair may be natural for you. And if it is, you're going to need to make the most of what you've got. And the shampoo that you use can make a real difference to how full and vibrant your hair looks. More so than many of the hair thickening creams and serums available on the market.

  • Enhance your hair's texture by washing daily with a hair thickening shampoo. Daily washing is important for fine hair. It will otherwise get matter or weighed down by oil and dirt.
  • Couple your hair thickening shampoo with a conditioner. This will help plump your hair out. You don't need to worry about your hair looking greasy, as you'll be washing it daily. Always use a conditioner!

Remember, hair thickening shampoos are not a magical shampoo. It won't double your volume of hair or make hair grow back when it has been long gone. But it will gradually increase the volume of your hair. For extra volume, no matter what length your hair, think about using a hair dryer for extra oomph!

What to Look Out for When Buying Hair Thickening Products

You want to avoid build-up with hair thickening shampoos, so look out for products which include some of these features:

  • Paraben Free:  Parabens act as preservatives that stop bacterial growth of products. So basically preserving your shampoo's shelf life. In shampoos it has been known to contribute to hair and scalp issues such as deterioration of the hair follicles by removing the cuticle. You don't want to use anything that does this to your already thinning hair!
  • Sulfate Free:  Sulfate attracts and breaks off dirty on the hair and scalp. Sounds great, no? However, it can also irritate the eyes and scalp. The last thing you want is an unhealthy scalp. That is not going to encourage hair growth!
  • DHT Blockers: DHT is a hormone which is a major contributor to hair loss. That's because it shrinks the hair follicle and creates a waxy substance around the roots. This results in male and female pattern hair loss. A DHT blocking shampoo will contain zinc. That's because zinc lessens the accumulation of DHT, and vitamin B12 to promote healthy air growth. If you aren't suffering with hair loss, rather just have thin hair, you don't need to worry about DHT Blockers.

Hair thickening products can be pricey. And shampoos are no exception. So you need to use them wisely.

Our Top Tips for Increasing Hair Volume

  1. Get a Check-Up: OK, it is rare, but fine, thinning hair could be a cause for concern for your doctor. Perhaps you've noticed unusually large amounts of hair in the shower drain? Or even patches of hair loss on your head? This could be due to all sorts of medical conditions such as thyroid problems, iron deficiency or anaemia. All of these can be treated. And this should be your first stop if you think you may be affected by a medical condition.
  2. You Are What You Eat: I mean, not literally. But healthy hair growth does happen from the inside. Iron rich foods are great for healthy hair. So think green: Spinach, Kale and Chard to name a few. Biotin is also a great one for your hair, and is found in bananas, beans, cauliflower, eggs and salmon. Finally protein is essential for thick healthy hair. Whether than be from lean red meat or nut, it will help your hair's condition. And of course, drink plenty of water.
  3. Anyone for a Scalp Massage? This is a win-win. It feels great (even better if you can convince someone else to do it for you), and also helps encourage circulation which nourishes the hair follicles.
  4. Shampoo Tips: A hair thickening shampoo will thicken your hair up. But only until the next wash. Shampoos pretty much work by temporarily swelling the hair shaft and depositing a thin film of the active ingredients on the hair strands. This though, can lead to build up of residue. So it is recommended that you use a clarifying shampoo once a week (or more, the precise timing will depend on your hair and hair type) to restart the process.

Detailed Reviews of the Best Product Hair Thickening Products

Wow, there really are a lot of hair thickening products out there. Our top three are all shampoos as this is where the biggest difference can be made. And all are suitable for men and women.

      L'Oreal Paris EverStrong Thickening Shampoo

A great shampoo for all kinds of hair thinning problems, be that male patent baldness or just lifeless hair. Brilliant clean, irritant free wash that really does give hair a fuller texture. Conditioner also available to buy.

      Features

      • Non-abrasive and respectful to hairs' fibers. Hair is cleaned without sulfates.
      • No harsh salts and parabens and 100% vegan. This shampoo also contains natural aromatic botanicals which we rather enjoyed the smell of!

      What's Good About It?

We found this absolutely did make our hair look thicker and made the very most of what we each had. Also loved how, compared to the other products in this category, you could go a really long time without having to use a clarifying shampoo.

      What Could Be Improved?

Not an awful lot. But it does sting a little if it gets in your eyes. Not a big deal though, and easy to avoid! Not recommended for children anyway!

Pura d'or Premium Organic Argan Oil Anti-Hair Loss Shampoo

We LOVE this product. It is brilliant for all types of thin or thinning hair. No itching, great looking healthy hair. Suitable for all hair types; men, women, color-safe. A real treat!

      Features

      • 100% Natural Preservative Anti-Hair Loss Formula with Broad Spectrum DHT Blockers
      • USDA Boibased Certified Ingredients, Organic Ingredients, No Sulfates, No Parabens, No Chemical Preservatives.
      • For all and every hair type.

      What's Good About It?

It really is brilliant. And does feel like a treat to use. And as you'd expect when you look at the price tag, it really does work. From a performance only perspective we would say this product edges it. But the price means that it doesn't quite do enough to warrant first place at the $35 mark!

      What Could Be Improved?

Only the price. It is expensive. But if you do decide to invest in this shampoo, you won't regret it.

      Reborn MAX, Herbal Hair Shampoo

Another product that blocks DHTs, is sulfate and paraben free. A great shampoo, lathers up nicely and definitely plumps up the hair.

      Features

      • Blocks DHTs
      • Stops thinness, dryness and itchiness
      • Sulfate and Paraben free.

      What's Good About It?

A really good shampoo, suitable for men and women, although the scent is a little more masculine than the other products in the top three. We would recommend using a clarifying shampoo once a week with this product, but if you do that you'll get great results and thicker looking hair.

      What Could Be Improved?

Currently no conditioner available with this product and is quite expensive for a 200ml bottle.

Final Verdict on Best Hair Thickening Product

You won't go far wrong with any of our top three. They all follow the key rules for a great hair thickening shampoo and we would recommend each one. Although we thought that the second placed product was probably the best, at $35 vs. $5 for L'Oreal's shampoo, we couldn't justify putting this one in first place. If money were no issue we'd go for the Pura d'or. But only just!
