Why Buy a Hair Dryer for Curly Hair?

Well ideally we'd all go to the salon a few times a week (or better yet, have our own personal stylist pop round to our own home) to get the perfect look. But sadly, for most of us this is not going to happen! So if you're going to get the best look for your hair, you're going to need your own hair dryer. And if you've got curly hair, there's even more reason to get one!

  • Curly Hair is prone to frizz.  You know it, I know it. Curls are great. But for most of us we need help to stay frizz-free. Curls come hand in hand with frizzy hair. This isn't a look most of us want. So a hair dryer; either to tame the curls and go for a sleek look, or to enhance your curls, is a must.
  • Sometimes you want a different look! There is absolutely no chance of achieving a different look for your hair, without a hair dryer. Having the option to go for straight hair is great. Why shouldn't you switch your look when the mood takes you? For this, you absolutely need a hair dryer. And a lot of product....but that's a different story!
  • Curly Hair takes a LONG time to dry naturally. And it isn't much fun going out looking like you've just stepped out of the shower, and still looking that way a few hours later! Being able to give your curly locks a quick blast with a hair dryer not only looks better, but also feels better especially in the colder months!

So to achieve a frizz-free look, whether curly or straight, you need a hair dryer. Below is a great video explaining some techniques you can use when you have curly, thick, or frizzy hair.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Don't be put off by the number of different makes a models on the market. Yes there are a lot, but here are a few things to consider in making this purchase.

  • Do you want a curly look?  Ok, you know I like to be able to style my hair naturally most of the time. I love my curls, and think they suit my face. So I need a hair dryer that helps me get frizz free curls. What does this mean? This means I need a diffuser and a hair dryer that isn't too hot. Heat can melt your curls (not literally of course!), and a more moderate heat setting will let you achieve the look you want.
  •  Do you want straight hair? You don't need a diffuser. You don't need a moderate heat setting. You do need a concentrator nozzle or attachment to focus the stream of hot air, and a powerful wattage setting (above 1500w) to get your naturally curly hair to be transformed into sleek, straight locks!
  • Fighting Frizz?  No matter what look you're going for, how much time you want to spend drying and styling your hair, you are absolutely going to want to, and need to, fight the frizz! But that isn't a problem. Just go for a hair dryer with Ceramic technology. You've heard of ceramic hair straighteners? Manufacturers have used the same technology in hair dryers. Often called different things, but they all pretty much do the same job; tame the frizz. So whatever hair dryer you go for, make sure it has ceramic technology.

Sound complicated? It really isn't. And the good news is, I've done a lot of the hard work for you. You don't need to trawl through hundreds of product reviews in online shops, just take a look at this review of the three best hair dryers for curly hair, and you should be in a good position to make the right choice for you and reduce that frizzy hair.

Detailed Reviews of the Best Hair Dryers

All of the hair dryers selected in the top three are great. I'd use any one of them again. But, I did have my favourite, and you'll see in the reviews below why I ranked them as I did.

Revlon RV544PKF 1875W Tourmaline Ionic Ceramic Dryer

I pretty much liked everything about this hair dryer, and will explain more below. It lets me achieve whatever look I'm going for, straight or curly, fights frizz and has different heat settings. I found I could go curly or straight easily with this hair dryers and would absolutely recommend it to anyone with curly hair.

  • 1875 watts of power
  • Triple Baked Ceramic for even heat distribution
  • 2 heat/speed settings for flexible drying and styling
  • Cold shot button. This releases cool air to lock-in the style you've just created
  • Concentrator and Diffuser attachments included

What's Good About It?

Where to start? For curly hair the lower heat setting and speed setting coupled with the diffuser attachment let me create bouncy curls every time. I wasn't damaging my curls with overly hot hair and I could control the frizz with the ceramic technology. A great professional look without the cost.

But it wasn't just about the curl. I created straight, glossy hair with this hair dryer. Powerful enough to straighten my curls out, frizz tamed with the ceramic technology, and protected from heat damage by the varying settings for heat and speed. Loving the flexibility this hair dryer gives me!

What Could Be Improved?

The only fault I could pick out for this hair dryer was that the cord is a little short. This is though, only a problem if you're not able to sit near the socket. Or you don't have an extension lead. I do my hair right next to a socket so didn't notice that the lead is slightly shorter than my previous hair dryers until I took a second look.

Allure 2200w Professional Ionic Ceramic Hair Dryer

Amazing hair dryer for taming curly hair. I really could transform my hair into a smooth, glossy look with minimal effort. Very happy with the look this one achieved, meeting the challenge of achieving straight hair that lasts is quite an achievement!

  • 2200w motor with a lightweight frame. Made styling much quicker and easier
  • Tourmaline Ionic Ceramic Technology. With such a powerful hair dryer, ceramic technology makes sure that your hair is protected from over drying.
  • 2 speed setting and 3 heat settings. You can customize the setting to your own hair type. If you've got finer hair, go for the lower settings!
  • Concentrator Nozzle included. Vital for getting the straight look, and taming the frizz!

What's Good About It?

This one may be the best hair dryers for straightening curly hair that I've ever used. It really did dry it quickly and sleekly. And there was no frizzy bits, not even at the hard to reach bits at the back. Definitely a triumph if you want to go straight!

What Could Be Improved?

There isn't a diffuser included with the hair dryer. You can buy one to attach on separately. And while I haven't tried this hair dryer with a diffuser, I imagine it would be great. The heat settings and power settings are set up to be used with a diffuser (low and gently is the way!) and the ceramic technology would tame frizz. But you do have to buy it separately. The only downside.

Rusk W8less Professional Ceramic Tourmaline Hair Dryer, 2000w

rusk hair dryer

I didn't realise so much power could come with such a lightweight hair dryer. Amazing! And, like all good hair dryers on the market today, it is infused with ceramic and tourmaline technology to rid your hair of frizz. A great hair dryer for transforming your curly hair into a sleek "do"!

  • 2000 watt motor with ion generator
  • Ceramic grill at front infused with tourmaline
  • 7 heat and speed settings with cold shot
  • 8 feet power cord
  • Comes with a concentrator nozzle

What's Good About It?

This is an amazing hair dryer for getting straight hair. It combines power with ceramic technology and various heat and speed settings to give you full flexibility. And what's more? It has an 8 foot power cord, so you can easily use this hair dryer when your mirror is a little further away from the power socket. Also, this is really handy if you're doing someone else's hair.

What Could Be Improved?

While this is a great hair dryer for taming curly hair and creating a straight look, it doesn't come with a diffuser. And I haven't found one that you can buy separately. So there really is only one look this hair dryer can give you; straight. And while it does this brilliantly, with no frizz and great power, you might miss the option to go curly too!

Final Verdict on Best Hair Dryer for Curly Hair

It's a personal choice. All three are great. But for me, if you want a hair dryer for curly hair, having the option to style your hair into a curly look is a great advantage.

So I recommend the Revlon RV544PKF 1875w Tourmaline Ionic Ceramic Dryer. It has all the features you need to create perfect curly hair. No frizz, not dried out ends and a style that lasts. It can also be used to give you a great straight look with a concentrator included alongside your diffuser attachment. A brilliant all-rounder.
