A new arrival in the family is such a beautiful and exciting thing. Will you be having a little boy or a little girl? Or one of each (gulp!)? But alongside the excitement that comes with the new arrival, is a rather large shopping list. Who would have thought that something so small would need so much stuff? One of the ??main things you will need to purchase is a crib?? for the little one. When your baby is very little, many people go for a mini crib. A slightly smaller bed for your baby. Cribs are huge, and more and more parents are opting for a more baby sized bed solution! Let's take a look at the best mini cribs on the market to help you make this important purchase decision.
There are quite a few things to consider when comparing different mini cribs. In collating our top three, we've factored in a number of different variants; can it be up-sized into a regular crib or toddler bed? Does it have a rocking functionality? Does it come with or without castors? Is it painted and is the paint safe for babies? And finally of course, cost. Let's see our top three products which, depending on which factors are important to you, should fit the bill.
DaVinci Alpha Mini Rocking Crib
( 4.7 out of 5.0 )
DaVinci Kalani 2-in-1 Mini Crib and Twin Bed in White Finish
( 4.7 out of 5.0 )
Dream On Me 3-in-1 Aden Convertible Mini Crib
(4.2 out of 5.0 )
Really the choice is between a standard crib and a mini crib. A standard crib mattress will measure around 38 inches long vs. a mini crib's mattress which measures around 25 inches (check out this review to help you make your decision). A baby will obviously outgrow a mini crib earlier than a standard crib (maybe 2 years old vs. 3 years old). So why go for the mini crib?
Whatever your reason for going for a mini-crib, you need to make sure it is the right crib for you. A mini crib will not be a cheap option (neither is a standard crib). So be sure this is the right decision for you.
When buying any crib there are a few things to consider. We've listed them here.
This may all seem quite daunting! But don't worry. Our top three best mini cribs all feature well amongst these criteria.
Well you don't really. If you want to co-sleep this is a perfectly valid option. In fact around the world the majority of mothers co-sleep. It is common practice in Southern Europe, Asia, Africa and Central and Southern America where it is the norm until baby is weaned.
In the US co-sleeping may be more common than you think. Research has shown that 26% of babies sleep all of the time, or most of the time with their mothers. ?If this is something you wish to consider doing, then take a look into your options, talk to your mid-wife or healthcare provider to get some more information and research this option for yourself.
If you're reading this part of the article, then maybe you've decided that a mini-crib is for you. Congratulations! A great decision. Each of our top three best mini-cribs offers a great option for you and your family and could even be a great gift for a baby shower. We feature two convertible options, and one rocking non-convertible mini-crib.
So easy to put up, clear instructions, fits easily into the small space in our room and converts easily into a full sized bed as baby grows. Loved the four levels of mattress, really helps to lift baby with minimal issues for sore backs.
This mini crib is practical as it takes up very little room and converts into a twin bed (practical to avoid the toddler sized bed if not viable for you) which will in effect mean this mini crib will last your baby from birth to college!
This is excellent value for money and love the style and look of the crib. ?
Conversion rails and mattress for the full sized bed must be purchased separately. This is hardly surprising as this mini crib is extremely reasonably priced. Just really a warning that you may expect the rails to be included for the full sized bed and they are not. So order them separately if you need them.
A really lovely mini crib. Available in a range of finishes and we love the rocking feature. Worked a treat on the little ones trialling this mini crib!
It really is a lovely mini crib. It isn't convertible, so what you see is what you get. But you get a really lovely mini crib. Available in a range of finishes, beautifully designed crib with the practicality of 4 levels of mattress support, wheeled function to move baby around the house to wherever you are and a wonderful rocking motion.
This crib would be even better if it could be converted into a larger sized bed to grow with baby. That said, if it did this is would be a lot more expensive.
Another convertible mini crib. This time, the Dream on Me mini crib has three different modes; mini crib, toddler day bed and full sized twin bed. Available in 7 different finishes. Can be bought with or without the mattress.
We love the toddler daybed feature that this mini crib provides. A move from a mini-crib right into a full sized twin bed is quite the leap. The toddler sized day bed option in between is a great one, and gives your child a stepping stone before they go into their "big bed".
Bed frame not included.
This was a tough call. We went for a convertible bed as this is the thriftiest option and definitely provides the best value for money. Whichever you go for, each of our 3 best mini cribs would make a great first bed for your little one.
