Best Mini Cribs

A new arrival in the family is such a beautiful and exciting thing. Will you be having a little boy or a little girl? Or one of each (gulp!)? But alongside the excitement that comes with the new arrival, is a rather large shopping list. Who would have thought that something so small would need so much stuff? One of the ??main things you will need to purchase is a crib?? for the little one. When your baby is very little, many people go for a mini crib. A slightly smaller bed for your baby. Cribs are huge, and more and more parents are opting for a more baby sized bed solution! Let's take a look at the best mini cribs on the market to help you make this important purchase decision.

The Best 3 Mini Cribs

There are quite a few things to consider when comparing different mini cribs. In collating our top three, we've factored in a number of different variants; can it be up-sized into a regular crib or toddler bed? Does it have a rocking functionality? Does it come with or without castors? Is it painted and is the paint safe for babies? And finally of course, cost. Let's see our top three products which, depending on which factors are important to you, should fit the bill.

Why Buy a Mini Crib

Really the choice is between a standard crib and a mini crib. A standard crib mattress will measure around 38 inches long vs. a mini crib's mattress which measures around 25 inches (check out this review to help you make your decision). A baby will obviously outgrow a mini crib earlier than a standard crib (maybe 2 years old vs. 3 years old). So why go for the mini crib?

  • Best Use of Space: Maybe you just don't have room for a standard size crib. Sure, in a year or so you know you'll move to a larger home, but in the meantime you need to save space
  • Many mini-cribs are convertible: You'll see with 2 of our top three, the mini cribs convert to full size beds. So it may seem a more financially viable option to go for a mini-crib if you get a convertible crib
  • Baby looks lost in a standard crib: Often parents say that standard cribs just look huge. And this is hard to disagree with. A new born baby really won't look like he or she is sleeping in a crib that fits him or her until they reach 1 year old. So for a more fitting crib, many go for a mini-crib.
  • Rocking features: Like a traditional cradle, a mini-crib (such as our second choice product) will have a rocking feature. So your little baby will be able to be easily rocked to sleep in their bed, while you can have a great night as well in your platform bed (because we just love those at TestingTeam!) A great feature more readily found amongst mini-cribs that baby-cribs.

Whatever your reason for going for a mini-crib, you need to make sure it is the right crib for you. A mini crib will not be a cheap option (neither is a standard crib). So be sure this is the right decision for you.

What to Look Out for When Buying a Mini-Crib?

When buying any crib there are a few things to consider. We've listed them here.

  • Materials: Non-toxic paints, lead free
  • Installation: Use the manual! The crib shouldn't be unstable, and there should not be leftover parts. Keep trying until you have a sturdy crib with no leftover parts. Call customer care if you're not sure!
  • Height: Make sure that the crib is low enough to the ground so you can reach in and get the baby without any trouble.
  • Lowering Feature: This is a feature that lets you lower the mattress as the baby grows. Meaning the crib is safe for longer.
  • Slats: Side bars should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart (about the width of a can of soda). This is to keep the baby's body inside the crib and prevent him or her from getting stuck.
  • Corner Posts: Anything that sticks out more than 1/16 of an inch is too much. Baby's clothes can get stuck on these posts.
  • Convertible Options: If you go for a convertible crib, make sure you like how the full size bed option looks.

This may all seem quite daunting! But don't worry. Our top three best mini cribs all feature well amongst these criteria.

Why do I even Need a Crib?

Well you don't really. If you want to co-sleep this is a perfectly valid option. In fact around the world the majority of mothers co-sleep. It is common practice in Southern Europe, Asia, Africa and Central and Southern America where it is the norm until baby is weaned.

In the US co-sleeping may be more common than you think. Research has shown that 26% of babies sleep all of the time, or most of the time with their mothers. ?If this is something you wish to consider doing, then take a look into your options, talk to your mid-wife or healthcare provider to get some more information and research this option for yourself.

What's Good About It?

This mini crib is practical as it takes up very little room and converts into a twin bed (practical to avoid the toddler sized bed if not viable for you) which will in effect mean this mini crib will last your baby from birth to college!

This is excellent value for money and love the style and look of the crib. ?

What Could Be Improved?

Conversion rails and mattress for the full sized bed must be purchased separately. This is hardly surprising as this mini crib is extremely reasonably priced. Just really a warning that you may expect the rails to be included for the full sized bed and they are not. So order them separately if you need them.

It really is a lovely mini crib. It isn't convertible, so what you see is what you get. But you get a really lovely mini crib. Available in a range of finishes, beautifully designed crib with the practicality of 4 levels of mattress support, wheeled function to move baby around the house to wherever you are and a wonderful rocking motion.

What Could Be Improved?

This crib would be even better if it could be converted into a larger sized bed to grow with baby. That said, if it did this is would be a lot more expensive.

We love the toddler daybed feature that this mini crib provides. A move from a mini-crib right into a full sized twin bed is quite the leap. The toddler sized day bed option in between is a great one, and gives your child a stepping stone before they go into their "big bed".

What Could Be Improved?

Bed frame not included.

This was a tough call. We went for a convertible bed as this is the thriftiest option and definitely provides the best value for money. Whichever you go for, each of our 3 best mini cribs would make a great first bed for your little one.
