Best Shampoo for Colored Hair Reviews

So many of us color our hair. But all too easily your hair can fade or highlights start to look brassy. You can't just color your hair and expect it to keep the look for 6, 8 weeks or longer. You need to look after it. The main way of doing this is with shampoo for colored hair. We've got our testers on the case, and have picked our top 3 best shampoos for colore?d hai?r

The Best 3 Shampoos for Colored Hair

Each one of these will make your color last longer. The top two are higher end and include a conditioner. But all three will absolutely protect colored hair and are sulfate free. If you want your color to last longer, these three will definitely do the job.

Why Buy a Shampoo for Colored Hair?

Why wouldn't you? You've invested your hard earned dollars on dyeing your hair the perfect shade, you love it. But a few weeks later vibrant red tones are starting to look washed-out, gorgeous bleached blonde highlights are turning brassy. There are many things that can act against your colored hair. It needs protecting from chemical shampoos, heat exposure, salt water, chlorine, straighteners and blow dryers and the sun. And shampoos for colored hair are the perfect way to protect your color. In fact, the only reason not to use them is if you hate your new color and actually want it to fade!

  • Keep your perfect shade for longer: The bottle may say 6-8 weeks, but this will only be the case if you protect that color. Bleached highlights needs protecting too or else you will have a brassy look before you know it.
  • Avoid Chemicals: All colored shampoos will be sulfate free. Sulfates are not your friend. Yes they basically are the ingredient that causes the shampoo to lather, but they do a lot more. They are standard in most household cleaning products and when applied to your hair can cause frizziness and dry out your hair as well as fade your color.

It's worth noting, that while this review is talking about the best shampoo for colored hair, it is a good idea to get a conditioner for colored hair too. They won't strip the color and are also formulated to give your colored hair the extra care it needs.

What to Look Out for When Buying a Shampoo for Colored Hair?

Your aim here is literally not to wash your money down the drain. A shampoo for colored hair will make sure you get the most from your investment. It will keep your color looking great for longer. The only alternative is not to wash your hair at all. And really, for most of us, this really isn't an option!

  • Minimise the Fade Factor: You need to go for a shampoo that is Sulfate-Free.
  • Washing is the Enemy: The more you wash your hair, with any shampoo, the faster your color will fade. So you need a shampoo that allows you to minimise how often you wash your locks. So if you have oily hair, don't go for a product for dry hair. This will make your hair extra oily and mean you'll end up washing it more often. This is exactly what you don't want to do!

But there's more to this that just a sulfate-free shampoo that suits your hair. Let's talk tips!

Our Tips to Make the Most of Your Colored Hair

As well as using a shampoo for colored hair, there are quite a few other ways you can make your color last longer:

Wait a full 72 hours after your hair has been colored before you next wash it. It takes up to 3 days for the cuticle layer to close completely; this is what traps the color molecule which lets the color last longer. ?

We've said this already. But worth repeating. Do not wash your hair too often. The chemicals in hair dye make your hair more vulnerable to water damage. This means as well as minimising how often you wash your hair, also shorten your rinsing duration and give dry shampoos a go.

Hot water really isn't a good idea. Now this is a tricky one, especially in the colder months. But if you can switch to luke warm (or even cold) water you'll notice a different. Hot water lifts the outer cuticle layer which allows color to fade. The hotter the water the quicker the color loss.

Be gentle. Rough drying with a towel will fade color and could damage the ends of your hair. Instead gently blot your hair and let it air dry as much as possible.

Using heat products. Flat irons, curling irons and hair dryers are all going to attack colored hair which is more vulnerable to heat damage. Use less often, and when you do always use a heat protection product. The same can be said of the sun. If you're out in the sun a lot wear a hat to keep the color from fading.

For lower budget we totally recommend the L'Oreal Shampoo. However, if you're looking to really treat yourself then, it was a close call, but we went for Biolage's ColorLast Shampoo and Conditioner.
