Why Buy a Stun Gun?

Stun guns are one of the preferred options for anyone looking to maintain their personal safety. It is a best-selling defence weapon and it isn't hard to see why.

  • Can be used by anyone: This simple weapon requires only a short amount of time to familiarise yourself with how it works before anyone can use it. It isn't difficult, heavy or requiring of great force.
  • Is discreet: More and more these products are getting smaller without losing power. So you can carry around your own security with discretion.
  • Works in any weather: Unlike pepper spray that is ineffective in adverse weather conditions, stun guns work come rain or shine.

A stun gun - a non-lethal electroshock weapon uses high voltage of electric shock to cause brief but intense pain and involuntary muscle spasm to the shockee. They are extremely useful as a self-defence weapon, assailants being deterred from attack with the threat of not inconsiderate amounts of pain. Typically, a stun gun has two metal prongs where the electrical arc is produced. When this arc comes into contact with a person the electroshock is applied. This causes pain and is capable of momentarily flooring a large person.

What to Look Out for When Buying a Stun Gun?

There are different types of electroshock weapons available to purchase. Here are the main types:

  • Compact: These are most commonly used for personal protection and are easy to carry around in your purse or pocket. Many come with a bright LED light which can help to disorientate an attacker, and give you the chance to apply your volt shock.
  • Heavy Duty: A large hand held stun device with a bigger and more powerful battery. Useful for more tactical situations or home defence.
  • Stun Gun Flashlights: Popular with security guards working night shifts, the extremely bright flashlight can be used to temporarily bling an attacker, and then the stun feature can be used to administer the shock. Typically these products have a lower voltage around 2 million, but the light is bright. Generally around 150 - 300 lumens.
  • Stun Baton: This is exactly what it sounds like. An electroshock device built into a long stick so you can shock an attacker from a safe distance. It can also be used as a weapon.
  • Taser for Women: Not to suggest that any of the above are not for men and women alike. However, there are some products that have been designed specifically for women in mind. There's the lipstick stun gun and pink stun guns to name but two,

Our top three are all compact stun guns. They pack a real punch and can act as a deterrent as they don't hide what they are. Remember when buying a stun gun to consider:

Voltage - look for something at least 1 million volts. The higher the better. As a higher voltage means a more intense shock. Also consider the shock duration. This is related directly to the battery size.

Battery - this may be internal lithium-ion rechargeable or removable alkaline battery. A larger battery means longer shocks. Also, if purchasing a stun gun with a rechargeable battery, remember that over time your battery's power will diminish with each charge, and should be regularly checked. Rechargeable batteries can be replaced.

Size - a smaller electroshock is great. And for most people sufficient. But in general a more compact model of stun gun will mean the battery doesn't last so long.

Safety Mechanism - you really don't want to accidentally fire off your stun gun. Trust me. Not a good idea! Look for something that is easy to use and has a robust safety mechanism. ?

Stun Guns vs. Tasers - what is the difference?

A taser is a brand of electroshock weapon used by police and military. They have two electrified pins and cause long lasting muscle seizure and incapacitation. They can be long lasting and used from a distance as the tazer gun fires metal prongs at the assailant. It is considered to be the most effective form of electroshock defence weapon. However, they are expensive to own and operate.

Stun Gun Laws

Stun guns are indeed legal in most states and can be freely purchased without any need of a licence of any kind. There are though some restrictions in some states. We've detailed these here:

?States where stun guns are prohibited: HI, IL, MA, MI, NJ, NY, RI & WI. In addition without states where stun guns are legal, there are some cities which prohibit stun guns: Annapolis MD, Baltimore MD, Chicago IL, Philadelphia PA, Baltimore County MD and Crawford County IA. Furthermore, in Indiana, stun guns are only allowed for home use.

When purchasing your stun gun, where legal, you should be able to find them in hardware, outdoor stores, s????porting??? goods st??ores etc. ?

Detailed Reviews of the Best Stun Guns

Our top three best stun guns are all detailed below to help you choose the best one for you. Each of our top three offers very high voltage as well as light weight and compact use.

Police Stun Gun

Police stun gun 75 million volt

The power that this stun gun can emit is really amazing. 75 million volts from a still compact stun gun that also features a triple mode flashlight and easy to charge. A great product at a great price too.

  • 75 million volts
  • Triple mode flashlight with 250 lumen and high, low or strobe modes
  • Convenient to charge - in any electrical wall socket

What's Good About It?

There is a lot that is good about this product. But the voltage available at some 75 million is the number one reason this product is our best buy. It packs a real punch and is still compact and easy to use.

What Could Be Improved?

The holster we found, to not be well made.

Vipertek VTS-989

Vipertek VTS 989 stun gun

A great product, easy to use and handle, an impressive 53 million voltage and comes with a lifetime warranty. ?

  • 53 million volts
  • Convenient size - 6.5" x 2" x 1"
  • Snatch prevention - shock plates run along the side of this product so you can deliver a high voltage shock if someone tries to snatch the stun gun from you
  • Ultra-sharp spike electrodes help to penetrate through thick clothing
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Lifetime warranty

What's Good About It?

As well as having a really powerful voltage at 53 million volts, we love the snatch prevention aspect of this stun gun. The metal shock plates run along the top and sides of the end of the weapon, making it far harder for anyone to successfully snatch this product from your hands without getting a big shock.

What Could Be Improved?

It is just a small thing. But the battery light doesn't change colour when the battery is fully charged. This would be an easy thing to change that would make a big difference to the usability of this product.

Guard Dog Security

Guard dog stun gun

Another stun gun that really packs a punch. This time the stun gun from Guard Dog can emit an impressive 60 million volt. It also has 4 front prongs for double stopping power.

  • 60 million voltage
  • Flashlight
  • 4 prongs for 2 simultaneous sparks and double stopping power
  • Safety on/off switch and included safety cap
  • Lifetime warranty

What's Good About It?

This product was so easy to use. It is fully rubberized so you?? can be confident that you won't drop this product, or accidentally discharge the shock. We also loved how impressive the product is. So as a warning only, the two simultaneous sparks are loud enough and visually impressive enough to scare many assailants away. But don't worry, the safety cap feature means that you know you won't accidentally discharge the stun gun.

What Could Be Improved?

As a way of ensuring optimum power to the shock system, the stun gun won't discharge when the flashlight is on. So you have to turn it off before you can emit a shock.

Final Verdict on Best Stun Gun

Now this wasn't easy, and let's be honest, whether you go for 53 million, 60 million or 75 million volts, you know that you have a high end heavy duty stun gun. We've gone for the 75 million volt product as our number one stun gun. It offers great value for money and delivers as both a flashlight and a stun gun. Easy to use and effective against attack.
