best thermometer for kids

You probably go your entire adult life BC (Before Children) with a very minimalist approach to a medicine cabinet in your house. A packet of Tylenol and a bottle of Pepcid if you're lucky, right? Parents though. Parents are a different story. Suddenly a whole cupboard is taken over to illnesses, bumps and bruises. And one of the first tools in a parent's armoury will be the thermometer. We've reviewed the market and have our top 3 best thermometers for kids. Take a look.

The Best 3 Thermometers for Kids

Why Buy a Thermometer for Kids?

You're going to need a thermometer if you have children. You'd be amazed how often you'll be getting it out, particularly when they're babies. Their immune systems just aren't as developed as ours. They are still developing. Add this to the fact that children tend to have closer contact with each other than we do, and you can see how illnesses will spread.

Did you know that a fever, although always a cause for concern for any parent, is often a sign that your child's immune system is doing its job and fighting infection? Obviously is a young infant  under 12 weeks it's a major concern, but as kids get older fevers can actually be a positive sign. Not to say that it shouldn't be monitored. As many as 5% of children are at risk of seizures with fever. These can be terrifying for a parent to watch, and you should get your child checked by a physician.

  • Because although you know when your child is running a fever, you don't know exactly how serious it is. Only a thermometer can tell you this. In younger children especially your physician will want to know how high the fever is.
  • Because you'll need it, more often than you imagined! Like I said before, kids seem to get a fever a lot (or a sore tummy, or elbow, or hair. The list is almost endless.)

If you have kids already you'll know why you need one. You'll want to get an accurate reading of their temperature so that you can get them better as fast as possible and get them back riding on the best self balancing scooter again. If not, and you're buying for the expected new arrival, then trust us, you will absolutely need one. So let's look at the different options.

What to Look Out for When Buying a Thermometer for Kids

There are an awful lot of options out there!

  • Where temperature is recorded: Mouth, armpit, eardrum, forehead or anus can all be used to record body temperature. With a child though most people go with eardrum or forehead.
  • Ways to measure the temperature - The old: A mercury thermometer. Most of us grew up with these. A narrow glass stem with marketing along the side to indicate temperature. Liquid mercury is held in a reservoir bulb at one end and rises through a capillary tube when the glass chamber is in contact with the body. But the mercury thermometer is a thing of the past. They absolutely were cheap, accurate, self-contained with no need for power. BUT mercury is a neurotoxin. Exposure (don't drop the glass thermometer!) can cause tremors, partial blindness, deafness and many other problems.
  • Ways to measure the temperature- The new: Firstly there's the Electronic thermometer. They can record a wide range; between 94 F and 105 F. They have temperature sensors inside probes that can be covered with disposable guards to prevent the spread of infection. This is then displayed on the screen. The device often beeps when the peek temperature has been taken and takes between 3 and 30 seconds to take a reading.
  • Ways to measure the temperature- The newer: An upgrade to the electronic, the infra-red thermometer gives temperatures with a stroke of the head. Extremely accurate, measure the temperature by measuring the balance between the tissues warming the arterial blood and tissue cooling caused by heat loss to the environment.
  • Ways to measure the temperature- The newest: This ones makes me feel like I'm in star trek! A simple and gently stroke of the forehead with the silver ion antimicrobial head captures naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery. The arterial heat balance computes the correct temperature.
  • Ways to measure the temperature- The limited life: Disposable thermometers are plastic strips with dots on the surface that have been impregnated with temperature-sensitive chemicals. The dots change colour at different temperatures. They may be one off or reusable for a set number of uses. Great for children as can record temperatures while the child is sleeping. Products vary in length of use from
  • ... add as many as needed

Here are some tips on how to use thermometer's to take your child's temperature.

But don't worry if this is all a bit confusing. We've tried what's available and come up with the best options.

Detailed Reviews of the Best Thermometer for Kids

You can spend as much or as little as you want on a thermometer for kids. Our top three are all higher-end electrical products. They are the best option for regular use, accurate and easy to use temperature readings.

Innovo Forehead and Ear Thermometer (Dual Mode)

Innovo Forehead and Ear Thermometer

I love that this product is suitable for the entire family. With infants under 1 you are recommended to use the ear for a more accurate temperature. It is precise for the whole family, easy to use and gives results quickly.

Features

  • Dual Mode - this is great. It's really quite hard to take your own temperature with an ear thermometer. But with this product you can be sure that everyone in your family can use the thermometer, no matter what their age.
  • It uses infra-red detection technology. That means that it's proven to be extremely reliable and accurate in clinical trials in both ear and forehead mode.
  • Easy to operate - just press and scan.

What's Good About It?

It is a great thermometer. I always want to use an ear thermometer for infants under 1 year old, but struggle to use these with older children or myself. Now here's a thermometer that does both. And thanks to the infra-red technology, you know that the forehead measurement is just as accurate. Love that it store 20 readings in the memory - really useful when you need to call the physician and report on your child's temperature, and the AAA batteries will last thousands of readings.

What Could Be Improved?

This thermometer has only recently been made available to the public. It does need to be properly cleaned to ensure accurate measurement. The sensor is extremely sensitive so any dirt or oil will affect the reading. You need to check and clean the sensor regularly.  Information on looking after the thermometer is included in the box, just make sure that you follow it!

iProven Ear Thermometer

Ear Thermometer by iProven

Another infra-red thermometer. This time for ear only. So you know that it's highly accurate But what I love about this thermometer is it is small and durable and easy to carry around and store. So not sure a large piece of equipment as some of the infra-reds on the market.

Features

  • Infra-red ear thermometer
  • Small, durable and easy to carry around
  • No probes, covers or caps needed

What's Good About It?

This is really easy to use and gives a great accurate reading. If you are happy to use an ear-only thermometer, this is the best value for money. I love that you just get it out the box and use it. No fussing looking for the correct sized tip, just pop it in, press and measure.

What Could Be Improved?

This does exactly what it says it will. And for anyone who is happy for an ear only thermometer this is absolutely brilliant. However, if you want a thermometer that lets you take readings via your forehead (not least for yourself), then this one may not be for you.

Temporal Artery Thermometer

Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer

Things have come a long way since the simple mercury thermometer. The temporal artery thermometer takes things to another level. It uses infra-red so is quick and accurate, bit the Temporal Scanner thermometer has patented software that provides arterial heat balance. Very accurate and can be used for the whole family via a forehead sweep of the thermometer!

Features

  • Infra-red technology for accuracy
  • Measure the arterial heat balance to compute the exact temperature via forehead for the whole family
  • Silver ion antimicrobial head destroys bacteria, mold, mildew and fungi. No probe covers needed.

What's Good About It?

Well it works brilliantly, it doesn't need to be cleaned and can be used on yourself really easily. Also it doesn't need to be cleaned, is in effect self-cleaning. Has to be a good thing!

What Could Be Improved?

So why isn't this at number 1? Really it is just because it doesn't work so well on damp skin. And I don't know about you, but often my children get a little damp with sweat with fever. And although there are instructions about taking the temperature by sweeping near the side of the ear instead of the forehead in this situation to make sure the reading is accurate, I feel that for ease of use the other two edge this one out. But only just!

Final Verdict

I love how accurate, easy to use, flexible (ear or forehead) and user friendly with the temperature storage option this thermometer is. A great buy. That said, any of the top three will do a great job.
